Autel Ultra, Ultra S2 & Ultra EV Review: A Dubai Technician’s Take

I work on a wide mix of vehicles in Dubai, including newer models and increasingly more Chinese vehicles. For me, a diagnostic tool needs to do more than read fault codes. The Autel Maxisys Ultra, Ultra S2, and Autel Ultra EV offer advanced diagnostics, ECU coding, guided functions, and electrical testing.

My take: they’re capable workshop tools, but not every shop needs this much functionality.

In the Workshop

1. The VCI Is a Real Highlight

The large VCI is one of my favorite parts of the package.

It includes:

  • 4-channel oscilloscope
  • Multimeter
  • OBD and bus inspection
  • Signal generator

The VCI also has its own power supply. Some measurements can be performed without keeping it connected to the tablet.

My take: Having these tools in one package is convenient. It’s especially useful when moving between scan-tool diagnostics and electrical testing.

2. Plenty of Functions, but Gateway Access Matters

The service menu covers common jobs:

  • Oil service resets
  • EPB and SAS functions
  • Glow plug resets
  • Supported battery SOH checks

Beyond that, you get topology, ECU coding, guided functions, and repair information.

Security Gateway access is another important feature. Supported options cover VAG SFD, Mercedes-Benz, Renault/Dacia, and FCA.

The catch: Some functions require separate licenses or activation. Don’t assume every protected operation is available immediately.

Working on newer vehicles in Dubai, I value having these options available. Still, I check vehicle coverage before relying on a specific function.

3. Guided Functions Can Save Time

I like that the tool displays prerequisites for certain procedures.

One example from my testing was a Mercedes-Benz GL500 throttle-body adaptation. The procedure required an intake air temperature below 35°C.

In Dubai, that can be a genuine obstacle.

My take: Knowing the conditions beforehand saves wasted time. Just remember that coverage and requirements vary by vehicle.

4. Software Restrictions Are Worth Knowing

The system doesn’t offer a conventional Google Play Store environment.

Autel also restricts unauthorized software installation and certain external data transfers. Violating its policies can risk locking the system.

I’d avoid experimenting with unofficial software on a professional diagnostic tool. However, these restrictions are worth considering before buying.

Autel Ultra vs Ultra S2 vs Ultra EV

Model Main consideration
Autel Ultra Original high-end diagnostic platform
Autel Ultra S2 High-end platform with configuration and package options to compare
Autel Ultra EV EV-oriented option for supported high-voltage diagnostics

The Ultra and Ultra S2 can also be offered with an EVDiag Upgrade Kit.

Strengths vs Limitations

What I Like

  • Built-in testing hardware: Scope and multimeter functions are right there in the package.
  • Broad diagnostic capabilities: Covers routine service and more advanced workshop jobs.
  • Gateway options: Useful for supported newer vehicles.
  • Guided procedures: Shows prerequisites for certain adaptations and calibrations.
  • EV capability: Available with the appropriate configuration and vehicle support.

What Could Be Better

  • Price: Hard to justify if you mainly read codes and reset service lights.
  • Extra licensing: Some protected functions require additional authorization.
  • Coverage differences: Not every function works on every vehicle.
  • Software restrictions: Unauthorized modifications can put the tool at risk.
  • Learning curve: Advanced hardware still requires diagnostic skills.

Would I Spend My Own Money on It?

I’d recommend the Autel Ultra family to workshops that regularly need advanced diagnostics, electrical testing, ECU coding, or newer-vehicle coverage.

It’s less compelling for shops handling mostly routine maintenance.

  • Choose the Ultra if its supported functions match your daily workload.
  • Compare the Ultra S2 if you’re considering its available configurations or EV package.
  • Consider the Ultra EV if high-voltage diagnostics are a regular part of your work.

From my experience in Dubai, working across different manufacturers makes broad coverage valuable. But vehicle mixes and security requirements vary by market.

My advice is simple: check coverage for the vehicles you actually service. If you’ll regularly use the advanced functions, the Ultra family is worth considering. If not, a cheaper diagnostic tool may be the better investment.
